Computer networks have been established for the enrichment of learning in the school. They provide students with the opportunity to prepare for the technological world in which we live which includes access to online resources enabling integration in all areas of learning. Access to the INTERNET will enable students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, museums and other repositories of information. Parent(s), guardian(s) and students are cautioned that neither Bear Creek Secondary School nor the Simcoe County District School Board has control of the information on the INTERNET, nor can they provide effective long term barriers to account holders accessing the full range of information available other than those constraints imposed by finite resources (i.e. BESS). Parents and users should be aware that some material accessible via the INTERNET may contain items that are illegal, defamatory, inaccurate, or potentially offensive. Every effort is made to provide a reliable computing environment. The specific conditions and services being offered may change from time to time. Access to the network at Bear Creek is at the account holder's own risk.
The Simcoe County District School Board and more specifically, Bear Creek Secondary School makes no warranties with respect to service and assumes no responsibilities for:
the accuracy or quality of any advice or information obtained by an account holder from any sources accessed via the Bear Creek network, or any costs or charges incurred as a result of seeing or accepting such advice or information;
any costs, liability or damages caused by the way the account holder uses their Bear Creek network access.
e-mail privacy. The e-mail system is not the post office and as such is not to be considered inherently private or personal.
any consequences of service interruptions or changes including loss of data resulting from delays, nondeliveries or misdeliveries
lost documents or damaged disks.
missed submission deadlines cannot be blamed on system malfunction.

The board network administrators have the right, but not the obligation, to monitor computer usage, communication, user accounts and file contents to ensure compliance with the regulations set forth in this policy.
Provide suitable supervision of students using the network. Electronic monitoring devices may also be used.
Keep all signed agreements on file at the school.
Grant or revoke user accounts (which allow access to computer network)
Monitor which Internet sites are being accessed
Bear Creek Secondary School has adopted a policy of ZERO TOLERANCE with regard to individual computer access accounts. Computer access is a privilege, not a right, and may be revoked without warning, if abused. Parents and guardians are responsible for setting and conveying the standards that their child or ward should follow. All users of the network are expected to use these resources in a responsible manner, consistent with the educational and informational purposes for which they are provided and to follow these rules and regulations.
Students are required to adhere to the following guidelines in order to keep their computer privileges:
All users must sign an Acceptable Use Policy in order to be granted an individual user account. This agreement will extend for the period a student is in attendance at this school. Language used in any type of Internet communications is to be of the same standard as other forms of communication acceptable in the school environment. Therefore, use of profane, harassing, threatening or otherwise inappropriate language is forbidden.
Computing facilities are intended for school-related purposes only and only authorized users may have access to the computer facilities. Students may only use computers if under the supervision of school staff/designate.
If a student accidentally accesses a site which contains materials which is pornographic, racist, vulgar or otherwise offensive, he/she should leave the site immediately and notify their teacher that such a site was accessed accidentally.
Using school resources to do recreational surfing, play on-line/local games, access CHAT lines, or message threads is prohibited.
Food and drink are not permitted near computers or in any computer labs.
The school's code of conduct applies to BCSS computer network.
Printing is normally the financial responsibility of the user. Any attempt to circumvent this cost is subject to sanctions.
Users choosing to use computer labs, when available, instead of the library are subject to the same charge for each page printed. Students using computers as part of a course may be required to pay for pages printed if their printing is judged to be excessive
If you identify a security problem, notify the system administrator at once. Never demonstrate the problem to other Users. All use of the system must be under your own account.
it is NOT acceptable to give out your login/password, share your account, use an account owned by another user, change the password of another user, use your account to harass someone or send nuisance messages, attempt unauthorized access to any resource, or use your network privileges for any illegal or unethical act.
If an account holder's password is known to anyone else, or if there is reason to suspect that someone has access to their password, the account holder should inform the network administrator and change their current password immediately.
Users shall ensure that they are logged off before leaving a computer.
Students shall not use the computers while access privileges are suspended or revoked.
Students shall only use their board assigned e-mail account. Other accounts such as 'HotMail' are prohibited from being accessed on school premises. This guideline is in place due to the anonymity factor and the frequency of receiving unsolicited mail while using these commercial accounts. Electronic mail accounts are to be used for responsible communicating only. The use of obscene, profane, forged, anonymous, nuisance, harassment, abusive, false, rude, inflammatory or threatening messages are not permitted.
Private or public messages shall not include profanity, put-downs, sexual, racial, religious, and/or ethnic slurs, or other abusive, threatening and/or otherwise objectionable language. Downloading and/or transmission of pornographic, obscene, or other socially unacceptable materials is strictly forbidden.
Each student will be given a fixed amount of storage space that can be adjusted based on curriculum needs.
Maintain personal fileserver storage requirements to a minimum. Fileserver and workstation space is not to be used for storage of unauthorized software, including games, music files, nor system utilities which may be construed as potentially threatening to system integrity. Users will not intentionally waste limited resources.
Each student shall save their work to school approved network drives. The network administrators have the right to view and/or delete user files without prior notice to the user.
Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy hardware and/or data of another user, Internet, or any agencies or other networks that are connected to the BCSS computer network. Computers are expensive and fragile pieces of equipment, and extreme care should be taken so as not to damage them. This would include, but is not limited to, tampering with configuration/system files, desktop, menus, or system tray, hiding files, renaming file extensions, introducing viruses, destroying, degrading or disrupting hardware, etc. Vandalism and/or sabotage will result in immediate cancellation of network user privileges, disciplinary action and cost recovery measures. (i.e. never alter hardware or software)
Students shall not send, receive, display, or store text or graphics which may be reasonably construed as obscene or offensive
Students shall not send messages containing any form of digital information or encoding that is likely to result in the loss or disruption of the recipients work and/or system.
Accessing or attempting to access any computer, network, or resource for which a student does not have authorization is strictly forbidden
Students shall ensure that their account is used for lawful purposes only, and no material is transmitted which is prohibited, inappropriate, or infringes on rights of privacy.
Using the computers for any illegal, inappropriate, or obscene purposes. Illegal activities shall be defined as a violation of local, provincial, and /or federal laws. Inappropriate use shall be defined as a violation of the intended use of the network, and /or purpose and goal. Obscene activities shall be defined as a violation of generally accepted social standards for use of publicly-owned and operated communication vehicles.
Plagiarism is defined in the dictionary as "taking ideas or writings from another person and offering them as your own." Credit must always be given to the person who created the article or the idea. The user who leads readers to believe that what they are reading is the User's original work when it is not, is guilty of plagiarism. Cutting and pasting ideas into your own document is very easy to do. When using someone else's work, be sure that you give credit to the author. The Student Discipline Code related to plagiarism shall be applied to computer use.
