Bear Creek Hockey Canada Skills Academy

THE PROGRAM

The Bear Creek Hockey Canada Skills Academy is available to any senior level student registered at Bear Creek. It is a specialized learning program blending the Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum and the Hockey Canada Skills Academy Curriculum.

Students enrolled in the Hockey Canada Skills Academy at Bear Creek are trained in hockey specific and hockey related skills throughout the semester. The program is developed by Hockey Canada in conjunction with National coaches and annually revised to provide instructors with state-of-the-art techniques and technology.

Students will earn two credits towards their OSSD, will receive a minimum of 55 hours of ice time, and will receive unique opportunities such as visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame, visiting Toronto Maple Leafs practices, visiting Team Canada events, and learning from guest speakers such as university and professional coaches and players.

 

HOCKEY CANADA TRAINING AND CERTIFICATIONS

Subject to scheduling and availability, Bear Creek Hockey Canada Skills Academy students may have the opportunity to earn one or more of the following Hockey Canada recognized training:

Coach Level

Hockey Canada Hockey University

Respect in Sport Activity Leader Program

Trainer Level 1

Officiating Entry Level

Off-ice Officiating

Making Ethical Decisions module

 

STUDENT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate leadership in coaching, officiating, and role modeling - both within the Program itself, and within the community.

Former Bear Creek Hockey Canada Skills Academy students who have excelled in skill development and have shown an interest in both mentoring and program development may qualify for an opportunity to return as Cooperative Education students the following year.

 

SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR

A Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a specialized program approved by the Ministry of Education that provides students with courses and activities that focus on a specific work-related sector.

Students may enroll in the Skills Academy as part of their requirement for Bear Creek’s Fitness, Sport, and Recreational Management or Health and Wellness Specialist High Skills Major or, they may enroll in the Skills Academy independent of the SHSM.
